Tabib, Zechariah
Son of Rachel and Shlomo, was born on 17 August 1929 and grew up in the Shivat Zion neighborhood near Rishon Letzion. From his childhood, he was educated in the spirit of tradition and religion, and was cautious in his commandments. Zechariah studied at the Talmud Torah and at the General School. His teacher said of him: “He was gifted with virtues, tall and taller than all his peers, humble, modest, quiet and kind-hearted and blessed with purity …” Upon completion of his studies he entered into the burden of work, to help his parents by supporting the his family . He worked with his father in the butcher shop and during leisure time – in the garden and in the yard. When he was 15, he joined the Haganah and at the outbreak of the War of Independence he joined the ranks of the fighters in the Givati Brigade. A day before his enlistment he prayed as a public emissary in the synagogue. Zechariah served only 11 days in the army. At the beginning of January 1948 he was posted with his department in Gan Yavneh. On the 27th of Tevet 5708 (11.1.1948), he was killed by armed men from the village of Abu Suweira (11 January 1948), and was brought to rest at the military cemetery in Rishon LeZion. On January 24. Givati forces raided the village of Abu Suweira, and blew up its houses.
