Stein, Moshe


Son of Chaya and Shmuel Yosef, was born on September 10, 1928 in Poland and immigrated to Israel with his parents on July 20, 1936. The family settled in the streets and received elementary education at the Rehovot school. Later, he studied at the Montefiore vocational school in Tel Aviv. During his seventh and eighth grades, and at the Montefiore School, he devoted his spare time to building a chicken coop and cultivating the plot of land next to the house and turning it into a vegetable garden. His love of flora and fauna was great. After completing his studies, he began to work in a metal shop in Rehovot and excelled in welding. He was a quiet, humble boy, respectful of his parents and devoted and loyal to his home and family. At the age of 14, he joined Gadna and as a teenager moved to the ranks of the infantry unit. He was devoted to the Haganah and responded to every order and call. With the outbreak of the War of Independence after the United Nations General Assembly decided to partition the country into two states, he wanted to join the ranks of the fighters, but was not accepted because of his youth, but only in January 1948 he was drafted into a Givati ​​Brigade infantry battalion. He participated in all the activities of the battalion, from the conquest of the Arab village of Salameh, through Operation Nachshon and the Battle of Latrun, and was among the fighters in Negba and the strongholds around Iraq-Suidan. On January 3, 1949, he went with his friends to take a punitive action against the Iraqis in one of the outposts opposite Kibbutz Ramat Hakovesh In the counter-attack by the enemy in the morning, Moshe was wounded by shrapnel from a shell that penetrated his position from a distance of 20 meters and was taken to the hospital, but all efforts to save him were unsuccessful and he died of his wounds On the 11th of Tevet 5709 (11.1.1949). He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Rehovot.
