Spurs, Reuben

Son of Leah and Ezekiah. He was born on April 2, 1951 in Sde Eliyahu. At the age of seven he moved with his family to live in Ramat Gan and attended elementary school there. In fifth grade he joined Bnei Akiva and was an active member of the movement. He taught at the “Elitzur” summer camp – a religious sports association – and participated in the Kinneret crossing. After completing his elementary studies, he decided, together with his two good friends (“the trio”), to continue his high school studies in the spirit of the Torah and they went to the Bnei Akiva Yeshiva in Kfar Haroeh. Youth training in the secular institution “Neurim” on Saturdays, out of a clear recognition that he must give values in the field of Judaism to others who do not get the same as him. This period of four years in the yeshiva high school was a period of maturation for Reuven, His teachers pressed him to continue his holy studies in Yeshivat Ha’Avoda In the twelfth grade, the problem of enlisting in the army arose, and like every religious young man in his circle, the question was: for a high yeshiva or an army? Reuven did not hesitate then (in 1969) was “War of Attrition” in full swing, and for a moment did not think to continue high yeshiva. Only after that, he thought, after I had finished my debts to my people. He wanted to enlist in one of the elite units of the Israel Defense Forces and was able to join the Sayeret, and he was recruited to the IDF in mid-August 1969. He underwent hard times in basic training. He was a yeshiva student who lacked proper physical fitness, was observant among many kibbutzniks in the Sayeret, and in his quiet and pleasant way, his great perseverance and great integrity soon managed to stand out and become fond of all his friends and commanders until he became the “conscience of the Sayeret.” . After basic training, he underwent a course for squadrons and a course from explosive devices. In his spare time he set up times for the Torah and used to explain religious problems and faith to his friends, with his natural, special pleasure. As a commander, he knew how to lead his subordinates without access and resentment, but with quiet speech and a pleasant smile of kindness. During his service he was wounded by shrapnel from a grenade that hit him and the doctors forbade him to return to the commando unit, but he made many persuasive efforts and in conversations with his commanders managed to “extort” a promise that he would be returned to the unit until he recovered. His commanders say that in a few days he was already in operational activity, quietly and modestly, because he had not recovered yet. After a while, his commanders offered him an officer’s course. On the eve of his fall, he spoke with his comrades-in-arms about remaining in the army, and some told him of their intention to sign a permanent army service, but Reuven told them: “I am a permanent signer in the army of God” “On February 6, 1972, as deputy commander of a platoon, he led one of the crews on a patrol against terrorists, and during this tour he died, while carrying out his duties . His friends said that Reuven’s religiosity, his exemplary behavior and the spirit of his sacrifice, radiated on them and constantly preached tolerance to the residents of Gaza (because they, too, were created in the image, he said). He was prevented from erupting against terrorists who had been in the IDF, while he was at the head of the attackers, loyal to the slogan “after,” and was brought to eternal rest in the Kiryat Shaul military cemetery. “During the shiva, his friends from the yeshiva turned to Reuven’s parents and asked them permission to gather in their homes once a month during the father’s year, For an evening of study and lecture in Jewish thought (Reuven’s favorite subject). Indeed, these evenings were held every month with the participation of many, and the Arabs were very impressive; The first day of the first year was dedicated to the Bnei Akiva Yeshiva in Kfar HaRoeh, a study room and library in Jewish thought, which was established in memory of Reuven, and every three months his friends gather for a study evening and a lecture in Jewish thought. Named after Reuven Shporen; In the number of young people in Bnei Brak (where Reuven’s parents pray), a “Reuven Shporen” A selection of articles by Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook zt “l was published by one of his friends in three volumes devoted to his soul, and a memorial book was published in his memory, which is educational in the Torah and military fields. A Midrash in memory of ReuSon of was erected in the Dovev Oz synagogue in Ramat Gan
