Soren, Gideon-Yehoshua (Gidi)
Gideon-Yehoshua (Gidi), son of Leah and Isidor-Ignatz Soren, was born in 1926 in the city of Bratislava, in the Czech Republic. In 1939 he immigrated to Israel with his mother, but the mother was deported to Mauritius while Gideon remained in Israel and was educated in the religious youth village. He joined the Palmach with the establishment of the Jewish Fighting Brigade in the British Army and joined it. During all the years of separation, his mother maintained the strong bond between him and her and he expressed his intense and deep love for her in frequent letters. Gidi underwent a short course in the Czech Republic and was about to return to Israel as a pilot-officer, but was killed during training while flying at a low altitude and crashed on 22 Tishrei, October 25, 1948. He was buried in the cemetery in Ulmitz, Czechoslovakia. On September 17, 1961, Gideon-Yehoshua was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
