Shpener, Michael


Son of-Rosel and Hans, was born on March 31, 1929 in the city of Essen, Germany. With Hitler’s rise to power, he immigrated to Palestine in 1934 with his parents. He studied at an elementary school and later at the Beit Hakerem High School in Jerusalem. He was a member and instructor of the United Movement, and at the age of 15 was already a member of the Haganah and a counselor in the Hagam (Extended Physical Education) school. Among his friends was the chairman of the high school students’ committee, who was interested in literature and read books, and was injured in one of the operations after the outbreak of the War of Independence, A paramedic in the same section of the front, as a medic who took part in many activities, volunteered for operations, and in one case forced his commander to allow him to take part in a battle. (25.1.1948), he set out with a platoon to secure a convoy passage in the face of enemy concentrations in the Castel area, and the Arab contingent came across from Beit Surif and in the battle that developed, he provided medical assistance to many wounded and fell during this operation.
