Shneur, Sarit

Shneur, Sarit

Zehava and Shimon’s eldest daughter. Born in Ramle on July 10, 1984. In the first years of her life, her family lived in Ramle. Thanks to her big heart and her willingness to help others, the weakest in the class were already seated in the first grade next to her to help pull her up. In high school she was the only one who was friendly to a religious boy who came to study with them, and her parents learned this only after she fell. Sarit, a diligent and talented student, combined biology with social sciences, and dreamed of studying medicine after her army service. When Sarit was in 12th grade, she set a goal: to serve a significant, valuable, contributing and challenging service in the IDF. She therefore went to the selection of a combatant in the navy and was even offered a teaching position. At the same time she prepared for military service in combat training. Sarit enlisted in the IDF on January 26, 2003, and was assigned to an observation course in Modi’in Sade, where she flourished and grew stronger and it was one of the happiest times in her life. In September 2003, Sarit was chosen by her commanders for her professionalism, to command the observation post in the settlement of Netzarim. On 28 Tishrei, October 24, 2003, at 4:00 AM, a terrorist infiltrated the base in Netzarim under the cover of fog and darkness, opened fire at the soldiers’ houses and threw grenades. Sarit, who was up at the time, went up to her room a few minutes earlier, went out to the sound of gunfire and was killed by the terrorist. A force from the Shimshon Battalion carried out a chase after the terrorist and he was killed about 200 meters from the base. She fell at the age of nineteen and three months. She was laid to rest at the Ramle military cemetery. Survived by her parents and two sisters. She was promoted to sergeant after her death. For full memorial, see Hebrew bio.
