Shemer, Nahum


Nachum, son of Genia and Eliahu, was born on 28.1.1946 in Germany and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1948. He studied at the elementary school in Moshav Beit Elazar, where his family settled. Nachum was drafted into the IDF in early August 1964 and saw his future in the ranks of the Israel Defense Forces and volunteered for the Paratroopers Brigade. After basic training, he participated in a parachuting course and was awarded “Paratrooper Wings”. After that he successfully completed a course for squad commanders. In 1965, he completed an infantry officer course at the IDF Officers School, where he was assigned the rank of lieutenant-colonel, and was sent to serve in an infantry unit, most of whose soldiers were members of the Druze community. After completing his regular service, he volunteered to serve for one year in the regular army. He underwent retraining and was trained in an armored officer course, after which he was appointed commander of a tank division patrol. In this capacity he was promoted to lieutenant. In 1968 he was discharged from the IDF and joined the General Security Service, where he studied Arabic and Oriental studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he married his girlfriend Dina and established their home in Ramat Gan, where their son Ofer was born in 1972. In 1971 he returned to the ranks And was appointed as an operations officer at the IDF headquarters in the Sinai. After completing his training course for infantry company commanders, he was sent to serve as commander of an armored infantry company in a tank battalion in Sinai in 1978. He was promoted to the rank of Captain Nachum was an officer with leadership, rapid perception and resourcefulness. In the Yom Kippur War, his unit participated in the battles of containment and infiltration against the Egyptians in the Sinai On October 6, 1973, Nachum was hit and killed in the braking battles near the ” Cracker “. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. Survived by his wife, son and daughter – Adi, who was born after his fall, parents and sister.
