Shamir, Giora
Son of Eliyahu and Miriam. He was born in the middle of the War of Independence on 9/3/1948 in Tiberias and completed his studies at Kibbutz Ginosar High School, which was quiet and humble in nature and loved to paint and read a lot. The IDF was recruited in November 1966 and assigned to the Armored Corps, and when he enlisted, he began to feel the distance from his home, because he was a devoted and loving son. He was gentle in his manner and always thanked for everything. His commanders were pleased with him, because he was a good soldier, orderly and disciplined. He received his service gladly, because he very much wanted to go out to defend the homeland, his family and his home. In a letter sent home before his departure for battle, he expressed his hope that he would overcome all the difficulties and be able to withstand the danger. He was also in compulsory service, the Six-Day War broke out, and on the first day of the battles, on the 5th of Iyar 5727 (June 5, 1967), he was hit by a shell that penetrated his tank, in a battle in Al-Jirdi, Even though he was on the verge of losing consciousness, he continued to fight until his last moments. This was followed by a commendation. He was buried in the emergency military cemetery in Bari and was later transferred to the cemetery at Kibbutz Ginossar, where he grew up and was educated. On behalf of the agriculture, he published a booklet in his memory entitled “Giora” on the first anniversary of his death. His name was immortalized in the book “Exposed in the Turret” by S. Tevet. In “Kinneret”, a two-month periodical of the Emek Hayarden Regional Council, his memory was raised.
