Shambadil, David (Dudik)

Shambadil, David (Dudik)

Son of Avraham. Born in 1907 in Hommel, Russia, to a family of maskilim and Zionists. His father was one of the first members of Hovevei Zion and the secretary of the association in his city, and he translated the Mishlei Krylov into Hebrew. In 1925 he immigrated to Palestine following his sister, who preceded him by a year. As an employee of the Electric Company, on 27 Nisan, April 19, 1936, he worked with his friend Avraham Pigzirt in repairing an electricity line at an Arab cafe in Jaffa. While he was still working on the ladder, a few Arabs burst into the cafe, knocked David off the ladder and beat him and stabbed him until he died of his wounds. He was buried in the old cemetery in Tel Aviv.
