Sayar (Lax), Moshe-Yosef

Moshe-Yosef, son of Menachem and Rachel Sayar (Lax), was born in Poland in 1924 and in 1935 immigrated to Eretz Yisrael. He served in the Palmach and completed a scouts course in Haifa, went to the Galilee and worked there escorting convoys and guarding roads. Having found great satisfaction in his role as a explorer, he changed his name Lax to Sayar (Explorer). He participated in the battles of Ein Zeitim, Har Canaan, Biriya and around Safed. In February 1948 he was sent to Haifa where he served as a patrol and sabotage officer. On the way back to Galilee, he was miraculously saved when his unit ran over a mine and eight of his comrades were killed. Moshe-Yosef did not lose himself and took part in the protection of the car until reinforcements arrived. On 16 Sivan, 13 June 1949, he traveled in an armored jeep that turned over during its journey. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa.
