Sasson, David

Their son was the firstborn of Aharon and Odette. He was born on the 20th of Kislev 5702 (20.12.1949) in Cairo of Egypt. After his birth the family moved to Helwan – a Yaffa resort town, where the father owned a luxurious hotel. There were no Jewish institutions except the synagogue, which served as a spiritual center for the Jews of the community. There was good relations between the Jews, the Christians and the Muslims, and David studied at the Christian school for four years. During and after the Sinai Campaign, the situation of the Jews in Egypt worsened: the conflicts with their Muslim neighbors increased, and hostilities increased. The family began to think about immigration to Israel and in 1957 arrived in Israel with nothing and was sent to the development town of Ofakim. The transition from life to abundance was difficult, but the family hoped that it would not be long before they would adjust to the situation and adapt. David found friends and soon became absorbed in the life of the country. He was a kind and mischievous child. He was successful at the soccer games and was a quick operator but most of all was a good boy by nature. The parents had difficult days because they could not find a way to earn a living. His father worked in harvesting the cotton and in the works of the Jewish National Fund and in the evenings he learned the language of the country. David, who saw the parents’ difficulties, felt very uncomfortable. At first he attended the Ofakim elementary school, but when he did not find his place, he moved to Ashel HaNasi (near Beer Sheva). Here the studies were integrated into the work and this combination was good for him. At “Eshel Hanassi” he absorbed love for agriculture, learned how to plant vegetables, and how to raise sheep and make great achievements. In the last year he was responsible for the industry and did his work successfully. He was also praised by his friends and educators. When he completed his studies at the school he continued naturally in Nahal, and in the last year of his studies he joined the Nahal Brigade and passed all the stages of the nucleus. David joined the IDF in July 1967 and volunteered to serve in the Nahal Brigade. During his service, he was not deterred by physical difficulties and despite the parents’ concern, he explained that nothing would prevent him from fulfilling his duty. For a year and a half, he worked together with the nucleus, whose goal was the Hatzeva, the Nahal outpost in the Arava, and he was very Simcha when his goal finally came true and he went to live in Hazeva as an agriculturist in every way. He was very Simcha and very responsible, and he did it successfully, and the parents were proud of their son, and felt that he had become his home, and he saw that he had come home, but he returned home quickly. Who finished his job as responsible for irrigation, was placed in charge of the vegetable garden at the end of the season when he left He was called to go down to the Canal area, planned all the vegetable crops for the next season, and when he left he was sure he would return and again be chosen as the man in charge of the garden, as his friends had promised him, and when he was at the front he was reelected. (23.5.1970), was killed in the Suez Canal by enemy shelling and was brought to eternal rest in the Ofakim cemetery, after his fall, his friends in Hazeva published a pamphlet bearing his name.
