Sandler, Yechezkel (Hezekaleh)


Yechezkel, son of Chaya and Hanoch Sandler, was born in 1930, in Metula. Yechezkel and his seven brothers all served in the Israel Defense Forces during the War of Independence. He was promoted to the post of platoon commander. Yechezkel participated in many battles in Jenin, Haifa, Acre and Tarshiha. During the retreat he went to help the gunman who was hit, and he was also injured in the pelvis, and in this situation he continued to give orders. Even when he was taken to a doctor in Nahariya, he was concerned about the safety of his friends. A few hours later he died during surgery, on the 12th of Tammuz (July 19, 1948). He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Nahariya.
