Sabra, Harel


Ben Shoshana and Yehiel. He was born on March 15, 1969, in Rehovot. Between two to a family of eight children, observes tradition and mitzvot. Harel attended the Pines Elementary School in Gedera, the regional high school in Gedera and the Jabotinsky youth village in Beer Yaakov. He chose the mechanics of airplanes and later moved on to agromychanics. Harel was a cheerful child, full of joy, full of humor and mischievousness. As an older brother, he helped and supported his parents and younger brothers. He gave them all warmth and love. He was active in sports, liked playing soccer and a lot of long runs. At the beginning of November 1987 Harel enlisted in the infantry brigade of the Golani Brigade, completed a long and difficult basic training course and was sent to serve in the Gdonim Battalion as Magist. During his service, Harel was raised to the rank of sergeant. Harel’s friends in the battalion said he had a rare physical fitness. He loved the army, was always optimistic and always smiled. “A happy guy, he did not like sadness, he loved life,” described one of his friends. On April 20, 1989, during a Golani force exercise in Lebanon, Harel was shot in the head by an IDF force who thought he had terrorists, and was hospitalized at the Rambam Hospital. Harel fought for two years. On March 14, 1991, Harel surrendered to his mortal wound. He was brought to eternal rest in the military section of the cemetery in Gedera. Survived by his parents, four brothers – Shalom, Yuval, Golan and Rami (Rahamim), three sisters – Ariela, Shani and Hodaya. The family members commemorated his name in a Torah scroll, which they donated to the Chayei Shalom synagogue in Gedera.
