Rubinowicz, Shmuel (Haramati)

Son of Bilha and Eliezer, was born on the 9th of Tevet 1911 in the town of Rozny, Poland, where he learned Hebrew from his father, the teacher, as well as the Bible and Russian. He later studied at the “Tarbut” high school. When he was 15, he joined Hashomer Hatzair and at the age of 18 moved to Hechalutz and went to a pioneering training program in the “Shachariya” pioneering training commune. On 13 February 1930 he immigrated to Israel and joined the “Ha-Kovesh” kibbutz in Kfar Sava. He worked as an agricultural laborer in the orchards of Kfar Sava and later in Ramat Hakovesh Farm Groves until his last day. During World War II, in 1942, he volunteered for the Nutras and served in the Coast Guard. When the war ended, he returned home. He was involved in the kibbutz, participated in arguments, but in the evenings he was a loner, introspective of reading Hebrew and foreign poetry – and even wrote poems himself, published in Ma’aleh, Davar, Derech Ha-Po’el, He signed his poems with the literary title – Haramati. During the War of Independence he served in the Alexandroni Brigade. On the day of the establishment of the state, on May 14, 1948, when the harsh attack on Ramat Hakovesh took place, Shmuel was in a forward position. He was wounded by a bullet that penetrated the post. Two days later, on May 16, 1948, he died of his wounds and was buried with the victims of the campaign in the cemetery in Ramat Hakovesh.
