Rosenfeld, Yehuda (Yudel)

Son of Sara-Miriam and Herzl (Hertzka), was born on February 1, 1920, in the city of Lodz, Poland. He acquired a popular education and learned the craft of knitting. From his youth he was interested in the problems of Zionism and participated in Zionist activities as a member of the Zionist “Hehalutz”. During the Nazi occupation in Poland he participated in organizing the underground youth movement. He was deported with his family to the Auschwitz extermination camp, where he lost all his family (except his brother). In 1946 he immigrated to Israel as an immigrant on the ship “Eliyahu Golomb”. He lived in Tel Aviv and worked as a laborer. Over time, his brother and his little wife and child also immigrated to Israel. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, he enlisted in active service. In April 1948, he trained in Tel Litwinski and was sent to a mobile battalion in Haifa, and later served in a division of the Carmeli Brigade. He participated in the battles of Jenin, Jaba, Mishmar Hayarden, Pardes Khoury, Daraa, various outposts, etc. and liked his comrades in arms because of his internal calm, modesty and responsibility. He was especially known as a deep disciplinarian and did not refrain from carrying out any task assigned to him. The company he served in was transformed over time into an armored unit, and he participated in all of its patrols along the northern border and often, beyond the borders, in enemy territory. At the same time – October 1948 – there were frequent clashes with Kaukji forces who succeeded in capturing the Sheik-Abed outpost that controlled Kibbutz Manara. On the 19th of Tishrei, 5709 (22.10.1948), he took part in the counter-attack intended to expel the enemy and seize the outpost and thereby reopen the road to the kibbutz. At the time of the battle Judah felt the help of a friend who had been wounded and also wounded in the stomach. He was given help on the spot, but it was impossible to collect the wounded due to the enemy’s lethal fire and the increasing number of casualties. His body was found 10 days later, following the purification of the Galilee from Kaukji’s forces, and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Rosh Pina.
