Penigstein, Israel


Israel, son of Leah and Aryeh Penigstein, was born in 1909 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. He attended elementary and high school. He fulfilled his duties as a Haganah commander and was one of the first to rescue the looted Jewish property in the new commercial center during the first days of the War of Independence. In the months of fighting and the siege of Jerusalem he continued to serve in the “People’s Guard”. An Arab sniper shot him on 29 July 1948. He was buried in Sheikh Bader A. He left a wife, Rina, and 3 sons, Arieh, Yehoshua and Yehiel. On the 30th of Elul 5710 (30.8.1950), Israel was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
