He had taken a parachuting course and a paramedics course, and he loved his profession as a medic. When he was sent by his unit to specialize in the hospital in Be’er Sheva, he was Simcha in his work there. On June 9, 1982, he was ordered to rescue wounded people on the front, near Damur. He did his job at risk, and was hit in the head by terrorists. For nine days Yochanan struggled for his life until he died of his wounds on 26 June 1982. He was 19 years old when he died. John was laid to rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He left behind his parents and nine brothers and sisters.
