He planned his vacations in the army so that he could spend time with his family during the Sabbath, and meet his old friends only after the end of the Sabbath. Near the end of his mandatory service, many tried to persuade him to continue serving in a permanent position, but he refused and preferred to go out to civilian life and fulfill his ambition to study applied mathematics. In the Yom Kippur War, Itzik took part in the battles against the Syrians in the Golan Heights.
