Lev-Tov (Guthertz), Zvi-Yosef


Son of Miriam and Dov-Yehuda, was born on 27.11.1916 in the city of Milasiewicz, Czechoslovakia to parents living in Galicia who fled with the influx of refugees from the First World War against the Russian attack. And the boy completed the elementary school “Netzach Yisrael” and the “Reali” school and began working in the ice and ice cream factory that his parents opened, and over time served as an ice cream specialist, a mechanic in the factory and a driver and a distributor. He was an old member of the Haganah when the War of Independence broke out following the UN General Assembly resolution of November 29, 1947, He joined the Carmeli Brigade in two countries. He simply told his parents: “We have to go and help” and actively participated in the conquest of Arab Haifa. From there he was sent to the Galilee and participated in all the activities. Recently, he took part in the defense of the Sheikh Abed outpost near Manara. The outpost was unexpectedly attacked by the enemy during the second truce and its defenders retreated. He wisely fired on his retreating squad and, at great risk, returned at night one of the casualties to our lines of forces. The next day, on the 23rd of Tishrei 5769 (October 23, 1948), when he tried to conquer the outpost, he straightened up to serve as a live shelter for his commander, and although he was still standing, a second bullet struck his head and he fell.
