Korach, Yair (Irin)

Korach, Yair (Irin)

Yair, son of Sarah and Chaim Korach, was born on August 16, 1922 in Jerusalem. He completed elementary school and with his own forces he acquired a high school education, and later worked as a driver. During the Second World War he served for five years as a driver in the British Air Force. After his release, he joined the “Mesila” cooperative, which was established by ten drivers, discharged soldiers, who were engaged in transporting freight, but the cooperative’s business did not succeed and it was dismantled. Yair was hired as a driver by the potash company and married a wife. The War of Independence that broke out forced him to postpone these plans to quieter and better times. Yair enlisted in the army, served in the Jerusalem Brigade, and three weeks later, on the 23rd of Nissan 5708 (May 2, 1948), Yair was killed in a gun accident while standing guard at a checkpoint on Mea Shearim Street in Jerusalem. He was buried in Sanhedria. On September 19, 1951, he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
