Kastiel, Shimon (Tobelm)

Shimon, son of Penny and Nissim, was born on the 24th of Tishrei 5721 (24.10.1951) in Sapi, Morocco. He completed six years of elementary school in Morocco, and after his family immigrated to Israel and settled in Netanya, he completed his elementary studies at the Sinai School in Netanya. He continued his high school studies at the “Kiryat Youth” vocational school in Jerusalem, where he studied electronics. He was a good student. At the school in Morocco he won prizes for his outstanding achievements in various subjects. In addition, he studied Jewish tradition and religion at the Magen David Hebrew school in Morocco, where he also acquired the Hebrew language. When the family immigrated to Israel, she encountered difficulties in absorption and problems of livelihood and adjustment. The head of the family began to think about the possibility of returning to Morocco, but Shimon, who was the only one to be fluent in the Hebrew language, forced everyone into the difficult absorption process and was the decisive factor in settling all the family members in Israel. He was a sports fan and in leisure time played mostly in basketball. In his relations with his friends he was shown to be willing to help others. When he studied electronics, his friends used to bring him broken electrical appliances in order to be repaired, and he did so willingly and happily without any consideration. He was a cheerful, alert boy, always Simcha and entertaining his friends with jokes and pranks, and they were very fond of them. Shimon was drafted into the IDF at the beginning of November 1970 and was assigned to the Navy as a communications technician, who spent about a year as a technician on the Navy’s ships and was later transferred to the Air Force as a Hawk missile technician. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, he worked for many hours as part of his duties, and on the 17th of Tishrei 5734 (October 13, 1973) Shimon fell in the line of duty and was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Netanya. Parents, three brothers and two sisters, and was awarded the rank of corporal. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the commander of his unit wrote: “When Shimon came to us from the army The sea, we acted in mutual cooperation to advance him in his military career. He worked with us in the work, repair and improvement of electronic equipment essential to the Air Force, and during his work, stood out in the order and thoroughness that carried out his work. He always placed his tasks in the unit at the top of his mind and to whom he devoted the best of his time and energy. He was picked from us at the beginning of his journey and his memory will remain engraved in our hearts. It is hard to comfort a bereaved family, but I am sure that his younger brothers, whom I have been privileged to meet, will follow his path and continue his work, and this will be your consolation. “
