Hirsch, Gideon

Son of Chanan and Penina. Born in Petah Tikva, on the 2nd of Teves, December 25, 1946. He began studying in an elementary school in Ra’anana. When family moved to Kiryat Gat, when he was twelve years old, he continued to study and completed his elementary school there. He then moved to the agricultural high school, in Kfar Silver, and completed high school there. He took an interest in sports, took part in marches, and went on tours of the country. During that period, he traveled a lot, in the various parts of the country. In his interest in folklore, he often read books, and listened to rare records on the subject. He was especially interested in the lives of other peoples (such as the Druzes and Circassians) living in Israel. Gideon liked to help the needy, and did not think twice about helping his neighbors and friends. He also showed great devotion to his family, and often bought gifts, especially books, to his mother. He was drafted into the IDF, in May 1966. He volunteered for the Paratroopers Brigade. In the middle of his service, the Six-Day War broke out. The third day of the battles, that took place in Jerusalem, Gideon fell, while transporting prisoners to the Rockefeller Museum, when one of the Jordanian bombs hit him. This was on the 28th of Iyar, June 7, 1967. He was brought to rest in the military cemetery, on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. In the book “Marinas Gabro”, of the Paratroopers Command, his history, and the story of his last battle, were written.
