Haim, Aviel


Son of Sarah and David, was born on 11.1.1963 in Rehovot. The eldest son was Aviel. At a young age, he was orphaned from his father, and four small children remained with him at home. He attended the “Sinai” elementary school and the “Amot” vocational school in Rehovot. He joined the Bnei Akiva movement, loved sports and hiking. Aviel was a diligent student and loved by his teachers and friends. On August 5, 1981, he enlisted in the IDF and served in the Armored Corps. When the Peace for Galilee War broke out, he was transferred with his unit to Lebanon. On the 28th of Elul 5742 (September 16, 1982), the battle for West Beirut was fought. Aviel advanced in a tank, with his commander and two other crew members. The tank was hit by enemy fire. Aviel was killed along with his commander and another soldier. Only one crewman managed to get out of the tank, wounded. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon wrote to his mother: “Aviel was a good soldier, disciplined, loved and loved by all his friends and commanders.” The commander of his unit wrote: “Aviel served as a liaison in an operational company, he was a disciplined soldier and excelled in his role.” Aviel was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Rehovot. He left behind a mother, three brothers and a sister. He was 19 years old when he died
