Grover, Gabriel (Gustav)

Grover, Gabriel (Gustav)

Son of Miriam and Jacob. He was born on October 20, 1910 in Vienna, Austria. In 1938 he immigrated to Palestine as an immigrant. He settled in Jerusalem and married a wife. He became a truck driver and worked long hours to support his family. He was loved by all people for his kindness and his willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. After World War II, he enlisted in the British Army to give his share in the war against the Nazis. He was posted to the Jewish transport company 462. On May 1, 1943, the ship “Aryanpura” was sinking, in which members of his unit sailed in the convoy of 27 ships from the Egyptian fleet from Alexandria to Malta. One hundred and forty of the unit’s men went down into the sea, and Gabriel among them. He left a wife, a son, three sister brothers. In the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, a ship-shaped monument was erected in memory of the missing, and next to it is a water pool with the names of the fallen engraved on the bottom. This fallen hero is a “maklan” – a hero whose burial place is unknown.
