Goldstein, Israel


Son of Leah and Shmuel. Born in 1898 in Galicia, Poland, his family moved to Eretz Israel in 1900 and settled in Rosh Pina, where he studied at the school in the settlement, under the direction of Vilkomitz and excelled in his studies, although he was a lively and playful youth. Maccabi and the Young Rosh Pina Association founded by Dr. son of-Yehuda (Leibowitz), was one of the main activists. At the age of thirteen, his parents sent him to the Alliance school in Safed, and although he had a new tongue, he managed to finish his studies with honors. Afterward he went to Jaffa and worked in the Palestine office. Two years later, in 1917, with the expulsion from Jaffa and Tel Aviv, Israel returned to its colony. Israel was “one of the cedars that the Galilee gave us,” as one of his friends put it, the living spirit and the living in the settlement. He led the young people in their war for their rights to vote and to be elected to the institutions of the colony, organized the youth to put on plays, Wilkomitz and organized social and cultural activities there. As one of the few who had mastered several languages ​​- Hebrew, Arabic, French and English – he always stood for everything. Not only was all the people of the colony loved; Even the Arab neighbors liked him because of his light and cheerfulness. In Rosh Pina, Israel built his home and there he married Shlomit, who gave birth to four sons. During the 1936-1939 riots he enlisted as a patrolman for the Hebrew Settlement Police and was in charge of security in Rosh Pina and the surrounding area. On the 28th of Adar 2, 5703 (March 28, 1943), he died of a long illness and was laid to rest at the cemetery in Rosh Pina. He left a wife, four sons and five brothers and sisters. His friends published a pamphlet in his memory entitled “Our Israel”, which contains some of his characters.
