Goldner, Menachem-Mendel
Son of Jacob and Eve. He was born on November 9, 1928, in Sniatyn, Poland. He immigrated to Israel in 1936 with his family and they settled in Haifa. Where he completed his elementary studies at Netzach Yisrael. After that, he underwent a series of professional courses, specializing in the profession of frames and in mechanics-maintenance. When he was sixteen, he joined the Haganah and was a member of the Haganah until November 1947. Menachem participated in all of Israel’s wars, the War of Independence, the Sinai War, the Six Day War (in the Golan Heights) and the Yom Kippur War ), As he told his commander: “Menahem’s heroism took place in the southern sector of the Golan Heights, near the Rafid Junction. On October 23, 1973, I sent a squad of technicians to take care of the tanks of one of our companies. At the same time the sector was quiet with shelling, and the technicians were quick to carry out their duties. During the day, an order was issued to advance several tools in the direction of the enemy and to observe his movements. One of the tanks left his hiding place and moved forward, exposed to the Syrians. They fired several missiles at him, and suddenly the tank turret was hit. The commander was killed, the driver went into shock and the tank began to burn. Menachem, who saw what was going on from a distance, grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran toward the burning vessel, his body exposed to the Syrian fire. When he reached the tank, he took control of the fire alone and helped to rescue the wounded. This action required courage and determination, and it was a natural act for a devoted soldier like him. “Menahem married a wife and established a home, and in 1965 his first daughter was born, and his second daughter was born a year later. He tried to be at home with his family and made sure to educate his daughters according to the values he most admired: honesty, modesty, love of the Land of Israel and the people of Israel, and from time to time he went to reserve duty and when he reached retirement age from the IDF reserve forces For an additional service, because he knew how few were a turret technician in his unit and that he was essential as a skilled and experienced professional. On November 23, 1974, Menahem died while serving in the military cemetery in Haifa, leaving behind a wife and two daughters, and his family commemorated his name in the Yad L’Gibor Israel Synagogue in Haifa and donated a corner A meeting in the Akim home in Haifa, in his memory.
