Gerdine, Zev


Zeev, son of Regina and Shmuel, was born on 11.11.1952 in Bilina-Gora, Poland. In 1957, he immigrated to Israel with his family and studied at the Netivim Elementary School, the International Vocational High School in Kiryat Haim and the Haifa School of Practical Engineers. Ze’ev was an outstanding student, diligent and knowledgeable and had excellent grasp. After graduating from the vocational school, he worked as a scribe at the Israel Shipyards in Haifa and excelled in his work despite his young age and was very fond of his co-workers. But he preferred to volunteer for a combat unit. Ze’ev was drafted into the IDF in early February 1971 and volunteered for the Paratroopers Brigade. His grades were high and his achievements were impressive and over time he reached the rank of sergeant. He was an exemplary soldier, very fond of his commanders and subordinates. Ze’ev was connected to his parents and family, loved them and cared for them. During his service in the army he wrote a lot about his life and his actions in the army in order to remove concern from their hearts. During the Yom Kippur War, Ze’ev took part in the battle against the Egyptians in the Sinai as a platoon commander. On October 17, 1973, he was killed in battle, while his battalion attacked a compound of the Egyptians at the Chinese Farm. He was brought to eternal rest in the Haifa cemetery. Survived by his parents and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.
