Fried, Uri


Uri, son of Miriam and Yitzchak Fried, was born in Vienna, Austria in 1920. He immigrated to Israel in 1938. In 1941 he was one of the first recruits to join the Palmach. He joined the special German unit, which was trained and established in Mishmar Ha’emek. After his discharge from the British army he returned to his kibbutz and served as an area commander until his induction into the Armored Brigade, Modi’in. He toured the jeep battalions and participated in the battle to conquer Lod, where his battalion played a decisive role. In guiding his battalion on the way back to the base at night, his car drove over a landmine. Uri died of his wounds on 5 Tamuz, July 12, 1948. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Dovrat. He left behind a wife and child. His memory was included in the booklet “In Memory of the Four” by Zera’im-Dovrat. After his fall, he was promoted to First Lieutenant. His brother Shmuel fell two months later in the battle for Lod.
