Elkayam, Eliyahu


The eldest son of Tzila and Charles, was born on January 3, 1963. In his first years he grew up and was educated in the company of the children of the kibbutz, and when he was six years old he began studying at the Nitzan regional school in Kibbutz Nitzanim. He went on to study at the junior high school of the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional School in mechanics, and during his high school years Eli was active in the Zionist youth movement and served as a youth counselor. After his graduation from the army, Eli worked in the field. He was known to love animals, especially dogs and horses. Eli treated them a great deal and was very attached to them. He had a poetic soul, and when he was a child he used to write songs. When he enlisted in the IDF, he was assigned to serve in the Engineering Corps, but after about a year he was transferred to the Golani unit, and his direct commander describes Eli in a letter of condolence he sent to his family. On 25 Kislev (11.11.1982), in the disaster of the collapse of the government building in Tire, Eliyahu fell in the line of duty and was laid to rest in the cemetery of Talmei Yaffe. He left behind his parents, two brothers and a sister.
