Cohen, Yigal
Son of Moshe and Esther. He was born on June 20, 1933 in Baku, Romania. Immigrated to Israel in 1951 after graduating from high school. He loved music and excelled in sports as a soccer player. He was by nature a humble and timid fellow who did not like to stand out from his friends. He was friendly with people, listened to a friend’s problems, and even gave advice when needed. For all that he loved, Yigal would be loved by everyone who knew him. In July 1952 he was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces and joined the Navy, as he was a veteran sailor and a professional and served in the “Eilat” until the destroyer drowned in front of a Romanian beach in northern Sinai; This was on the 18th of Tishrei 5728 (21.10.1967). He left a wife and little daughter. Since his body was lowered to the depths of the sea, a monument was placed in his memory for the missing soldiers in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. And after a while he was assigned a gravestone in the military cemetery in Haifa. This fallen hero is a “maklan” – a hero whose burial place is unknown.
