Burstein, Uri


Uri, son of Deborah and Israel, was born on the 9th of Sivan 5712 (9.7.1952) in Tel Aviv. When he was a year old, the family moved to Givatayim, where Uri studied at the Katznelson Elementary School and the Kalai High School, and was a member of the Hanoar Haoved movement, and Uri was a diligent student in his studies. When one of his friends was ill, it was Uri who came to visit him and help him complete the missing in his studies. Uri loved the art of the theater and at school was a member of a drama club, participated in plays and served as a announcer in various performances and ceremonies. Uri was drafted into the IDF in early November 1970, and was assigned to the Armored Corps. He spent most of his military service on the southern front, where the Yom Kippur War also found him. When the war broke out his unit was near the Suez Canal. On October 6, 1973, at the first hour of the war, his tank was hit by an anti-tank missile, and Uri was killed. He was brought to eternal rest in the military section of the Kiryat Shaul cemetery. He was survived by a father, mother and brother. After his fall, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In a letter of condolences to the family, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan wrote: “Uri was an excellent soldier and a loyal friend, Uri was loved by everyone.” And his commander wrote: “Uri was a brave and very devoted commander to his soldiers, Uri performed his duties with honors, knowledge and dedication.” His name was immortalized by the Kalai High School, which planted a grove in memory of its fallen soldiers, and was commemorated at the monument erected near Heletz by the battalion headquarters in memory of the fallen soldiers.
