Ben-Hemo, David

Ben-Hemo, David

Son of Refael and Esther. Born on December 30, 1948 in the city of Meknes, Morocco. The family immigrated to Israel in 1956 and settled in Be’er Sheva. David graduated with honors from the “Sinai” religious elementary school in Be’er Sheva and then took the entrance exams and was one of the few who were admitted to the “Carmit” High School for Education (now the Boyer boarding school) in Jerusalem. At the boarding school, David faced a tremendous effort to complete the gap between the information he acquired in the elementary school and those required of him in the academic high school, but his seriousness and responsibility overcame the difficulties and reached the matriculation exams in 1967 immediately after the Six-Day War. Despite his surgery at Hadassah, he volunteered to help with all the defensive work done at the boarding school, and after the war decided to take the matriculation exams. Prior to his military service, he took second place in the 100-meter run for Jerusalem youth. He was a youth instructor for sports and also gave lessons. Be kind, pure and shy – and in these qualities he bought the Lev of his friends and educators. A very sensitive soul was a boy and although he was famous as a sportsman, as mentioned above, he wrote in secret dozens of songs, stories and lists. He was very attached to his parents’ home and the move to boarding school did not diminish his respect and love for his family. In August 1967, he was drafted into the IDF with clear recognition and was able to participate with his unit in an operation The reprisal against the bases of the Jordanian saboteurs; This operation is known as the Karameh operation, which is the town, east of the Jordan, from which the enemy’s saboteurs went to Israel. Upon his return from this action, his mother asked him why he had chosen a combat unit, that its actions were dangerous; He replied: “If every mother says the same, who will fight for us?” A few days after this operation, David fell in the line of duty; This was on the 25th of Adar 5738 (March 25, 1968). He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Be’er Sheva. A booklet in his memory and in his name appeared on behalf of the Boyer High School.
