Beckman, Shmuel


Son of Roza and Haim, was born in 1905 in Egypt to parents of Russian origin and acquired a high school education. Even in his youth, he was connected to the Zionist idea and worked for immigration. In 1936 he immigrated to Israel and settled in Jerusalem, where he worked as a mechanic and truck driver, and recently as a taxi driver. He was also a driving instructor. During the Second World War he served in the British Army in Egypt, with the rank of corporal. After his discharge from the army he joined the Haganah and was one of its most active and dedicated members. When the War of Independence broke out, he was one of the first recruits and as a Haganah convoy officer he participated in battles and convoys to Kfar Etzion, Hartuv, Ramat Rachel, Mekor Haim, Talpiot and the study farm. Once returning from escorting the convoy to Hartuv, where most of its members fell, he was very depressed, but soon overcame his depression. On April 11, 1948, he was seriously wounded in the stomach as he was leaving a convoy to Atarot. He was transferred to Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus and died of his wounds on April 22, 1948. He was buried in Sanhedria. He left behind a wife, Bella, and four children. On the fifteenth of Cheshvan 5711 (15.11.1951) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
