Gershon loved his family and was very attached to her, so he did not regret it and went out to work with joy. He was filled with pride and satisfaction knowing that his work would help his father and his family overcome their financial difficulties. Even the military authorities postponed his recruitment, after they realized how essential the help he was giving his elderly parents was. Gershon was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces in early October 1956. After completing basic training, he was transferred to one of the field units of the infantry as a combat medic, and was trusted by his comrades in arms.
