Azan, Joseph


Son of Victoria and Shlomo, was born on June 13, 1931 in Damascus, the capital of Syria. Where he graduated from elementary school and immigrated to Israel in 1943 at the age of 12. Yosef lived in the Hatikva neighborhood of Tel Aviv, studied carpentry and worked in his profession. When he arrived in Israel, he joined the Hagana, completed a commanding officer course, but did not work in command, and at the beginning of the War of Independence he enlisted and was one of the defenders of Tel Aviv’s borders, from where he was transferred to Jerusalem and was one of the first to escort convoys to Jerusalem. He was severely injured in the leg and only six months later, on the 16th of Cheshvan 5709 (16.11.1948), before taking part in a trip to Negba during his vacation. Joseph was brought to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
