Avni (Steinbock), Shraga


Son of Goldina and Hermann. Born in 1922 in Baku, Romania. After finishing elementary school, he moved to a Jewish vocational school in Bucharest, where he realized his inclination to work. In Baku he belonged to the Zionist youth movement. In 1936 he accepted the call of his older brother, who was in Kibbutz Geva, to come to Eretz Israel. Shraga was educated in Geva for two years and then decided to work as a driver in Oded Wingate’s “Night Squads” around Safed. In 1939, after receiving the consent of his brother, he enlisted in the British army as part of an Israeli driver’s unit at the age of 18.
