Atzvi, Nathan

Atzvi, Nathan

Son of Miriam and Aharon, was born on December 25, 1927 in Jerusalem. During the struggle against the British he joined the Irgun underground. His parents worried when he was away from home for his underground activities and asked him to go to study in America, but he did not agree. This was his land. Nathan was cheerful, strong, lively, daring and brave; the first to suffer and sacrifice. When the War of Independence broke out Nathan participated with members of his organization in an attack on the Manshiya neighborhood in northern Jaffa. He blew up an Arab stand in Rimonim. He joined the army with the recruitment of Irgun soldiers, served in the Oded Brigade, and participated in battles in the Negev and the Galilee. Nathan fell when he volunteered to dismantle a checkpoint where a landmine had been hidden, on 28 Tishrei (31.10.1948). He was brought to rest in the military cemetery in Rosh Pina, and the nearby fort is named after him.
