Ashkenazi, Zvi

Ashkenazi, Zvi

Son of Rachel and Asher. He was born on the 12th of Menachem Av (21 August 1921) in Yesod Hamaala. His grandfather, Yisrael Ashkenazi, was one of the founders of the moshava in 1884. Zvi was a young, proud, solid, simple and warm and thoughtful man. There was always a smile on his face. On the morning of June 18, 1946, two days after the “Night of the Bridges”, a British army surrounded the farms of Kfar Giladi and Tel Hai in the Upper Galilee, besieging them with armored vehicles and tanks. When this became known to the people of the nearby settlements, rescue forces immediately left Mahanayim, Ayelet Hashahar, Hulata and Yesod HaMa’ala. In the afternoon they arrived at the vicinity of Tel Hai, where they encountered shots fired by the Israel Defense Forces, killing two people and injuring six. Another Jew died of his wounds four days later. Among those killed was Zvi Ashkenazi, who was shot in the back of the neck. Zvi was laid to rest at the base of Maaleh. He left parents, three brothers and three sisters.
