Amrani, Shalom

Son of Avraham and Sarah. He was born on 28.8.1937 in Yemen. As a child he studied in the “cheder”. In 1949 he came to Israel in Operation “On the Wings of Eagles”. During the first few days, the family sat in the Rosh Ha’ayin transit camp and then moved to Yavneh until three months later they arrived at Yesod HaMa’ala and settled there. Shalom began to study at the local school, and in the afternoon he worked and helped the family agriculture (because his father was old and feeble) and only in the evening was he free to prepare his homework. Four years later, the family moved to Kfar Saba, but the boy did not want to stop his studies and say goodbye to his friends who liked him for his modesty, his generosity and his friendship; He remained there, continued his studies and work, and stayed with his parents only on Saturdays. He loved work and especially the work of the land, and his purpose was to engage in agriculture. After graduating from elementary school, he had to struggle hard with his family until he was able to convince them to allow him to study at the agricultural school in Nahalal. When he learned there he would repeat: “In Nahalal I found what I wanted, because his ambition was to return with his family to Yesod HaMa’ala, to settle there and develop an agricultural farm instead of hoping that with his own hands he would succeed in raising the standard of living of his family. His age was called to fulfill his duty of service in the IDF in August 1955 and can not continue his studies. During the short period of his service, he became a courageous soldier and excelled in his mission and in keeping his secret. One day he told his friend that he, too, would like to participate in one of the battles, because “Why should I be an exception, why do others fall for the homeland and I will sit idly by?” During his service he took part in several military operations, and on one of them, on the 27th of Mershvan, 5711 (1.11.1956), during the Sinai Campaign, he fell. He was buried in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul and on the 24th of Tishrei, 5710 (October 24, 1957) he was put to rest at the cemetery in Kfar Saba. After they fell, his friends took out a booklet in his memory.
