Amar, Avraham (Ben Gershon)


Son of Sarah and Moshe, was born in 1926 in the vicinity of San’a, Yemen. Immigrated to Israel on January 1, 1947 and lived in the Mahaneh Yehuda neighborhood of Petah Tikva. He worked as a builder and was a member of the Haganah. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he enlisted and served in the Alexandroni Brigade. He participated in the battles of Jaffa, Salameh and the villages near Zichron Yaacov, Arab Kfar Saba, Migdal Tzedek and Latrun. On July 15, 1948, in the evening, his company replaced another company from the brigade in the posts east of Kula and had not yet managed to prepare and dig in properly. On the morning of the 9th of Tammuz 5708 (16.7.1948), the Legion attacked the fort with artillery and armored cars, swept the positions of the platoon at the front post and forced the company to retreat, and remained in position despite the entreaties of its members, In his innocence of retreating with the bullets of his machine gun, he was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Netanya.
